Most Haunted Places to Visit around the World
From Ghost Stories to Ghost Tourism. For as long as people have traveled, stories of hauntings and superstitions have been part of the folklore. But interest in the history, the horror, and the supernatural has become a cottage industry for tourism: ghosts, ghost stories, and haunted sites. People travel to feel connected to a place where something from the past still echoes. In this paper, I will discuss several of the world’s most famous haunted locations. I will talk about their history, the hauntings that occur there, and how they became tourist destinations.
Europe

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland : Sitting atop Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle has a long history of bloodshed, murder, royal conspiracies, and plagues. The dungeons and the Culross St. Andrew’s Chapel are rumored to be haunted by former prisoners and soldiers. Many visitors experience cold spots, mysterious voices, and the ghostly image of a woman in a blue gown wandering the Great Hall. It comes as no surprise that nighttime tours, which include a lantern-led walk through the castle’s dark passageways, are quite popular.

The Tower of London, England : This old palace-turned-prison is said to be haunted by many ghosts, including Anne Boleyn (Henry VIII’s second wife). Sightings include hearing footsteps on the Traitor’s Gate, cold spots, and a grey mist near the White Tower. A “Ghost Tour” takes thousands through the tower every year, offering a mix of historical information and theatrical tales of the paranormal.

Poveglia Island, Italy: This island in the Venetian lagoon has a dark history as a 16th-century plague quarantine site and a former insane asylum. Rumor has it that the ghosts of plague and mentally ill victims haunt the empty structures. Although the island is technically off-limits to visitors, visitors can take “horror” boat tours around the island that depart from Venice, Lido, or Fusina to see the ruins up close and hear spine-tingling tales from knowledgeable guides.
North America
Here are the countries and territories that are currently recognised as sovereign states in North America.

Myrtles Plantation, Louisiana, USA: Known as “the most haunted house in America, Myrtles Plantation is an antebellum mansion near St. Francisville. According to legend, a slave owner was shot and killed here in the early 1800s, and before he died, he cursed the plantation. Various visitors and employees have reported hearing the sound of a child laughing in the attic, spotting a lady in a green dress, and feeling icy blasts of air in closed rooms. Myrtles offers daytime tours of the plantation and nighttime “ghost hunts,” where visitors can use EMF meters to detect paranormal activity.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Pennsylvania, USA: Known for its one-of-a-kind solitary-confinement facility, the penitentiary has been in operation since 1829. In its 150 years of operation, many prisoners and security personnel reportedly met untimely demises. Apparitions of a shadow person floating through the prison’s corridors and the rattling of chains are commonly cited experiences. One of the most popular stops on the haunted attraction circuit, the former prison puts on a Halloween-themed show in Cell Block B.

The Winchester Mystery House, California, USA. This Victorian mansion was built by the widow of the Winchester rifle heir. The house has stairs leading to the ceiling, doors that open into walls, and secret rooms. The story goes that Sarah Winchester built this house to try to mislead the spirits of the people killed with Winchester rifles. Visitors claim to hear strange noises, feel cold spots, and see ghosts in the attic. The house is open for daytime tours and nighttime “spirit guide” tours to explain the house’s spiritual history.
Asia

Aokigahara Forest, Japan : Aokigahara Forest (also referred to as the Sea of Trees) lies at the foot of Mount Fuji and has a tragic reputation for being a popular location for suicides. The eerie quiet caused by the dense canopy of trees, combined with the legends of yurei (ghosts), makes this location extremely frightening. Besides its natural beauty, which makes the forest a popular hiking location, the Japanese government has put up Suicide Prevention signs, and the guides that lead the tourists through the forest speak not only about the ecological importance of the place but also about the terrifying legends. Some tourists reported hearing faint cries and feeling an eerie atmosphere around Suicide Rocks.

Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan, India: India’s supposed most haunted place, Bhangarh Fort, was deserted in the 17th century after it was said to have been cursed by a sage who lived there. The fort ruins are overgrown with banyan trees, and the surrounding area is said to be haunted by malevolent spirits that emerge at nightfall. Although the government has forbidden access to the fort after dusk, thrill seekers can still visit on midnight excursions led by local guides, who point out ghostly men in dhotis and tell stories of incense-like fumes that waft through the air without origin.
Africa
In Africa, six nations have nuclear power plans: Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania. None has operational nuclear power stations yet.

Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town, South Africa: The Castle of Good Hope was built by the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century and is considered one of the oldest colonial fortresses in the Southern Hemisphere. Various tales tell of a white-robed specter referred to as “the Lady in White, who is said to be the spirit of the governor’s wife, who died under unfortunate circumstances. Employees have spoken of hearing piano music in the otherwise vacant halls and spotting phantoms in the Old Chapel. Guided night tours include ghost stories, during which visitors can participate in “historical séances” within the fort’s walls.
For those who travel to visit haunted sites, the experience is exciting, but it also allows a personal connection to the past. Whether visiting the historical dungeons in Edinburgh Castle or walking through the darkness of Aokigahara, there is a shared knowledge of the events that occurred at each location. By supporting local businesses and attractions in haunted locations, the ghosts and their stories will be preserved for future generations to discover.
